Issues with Celebrity lifestyles:
Here I'm looking at the different issues with celebrity lifestyles
Eating Disorders:
We, as a society, have arrived at a place where our idols and role models on the screen are impossibly thin. (As much as the world loves Adele, stars who exemplify real-life beauty are few and far between — Dior recently felt the need to Photoshop even Jennifer Lawrence down to an unrealistic size.) And we accept, and obsess over, the fact that they're very likely physical ill. Talking openly about disordered eating might just do more harm than good. "Our culture needs to think of thinness as a potential sign of disease," says Dr. Marcia Herrin, the founder of the Dartmouth College Eating Disorders Prevention, Education and Treatment Program, who now runs a private practice in New Hampshire. "And we don't, we marvel about it." I think that making disorders more known to people, is what celebrities need to do, as their young fans might want to look like them so in that case they would be more inclined to go on eating disorders to look like their icons. I believe that it is really silly, if someone goes under eating disorders to look like their desired role model. These people go under intense pressure and want to continue on in their fight to look slimmer. As for the Dior campaign with Jennifer Lawrence, her response wasn't that great: "Oh my god, I haven’t seen this. That doesn’t look like me at all. I love Photoshop more than anything in the world. Of course it’s Photoshop, people don’t look like that." Alcohol:
But how much of a part do celebrities really play in the fact Britain’s drinking less? Celebrity PR Max Clifford thinks that stars have a huge influence because of the massive amount of media coverage they get. Thompson, meanwhile, says that with the impact of social media, fans feel more personally connected to celebrities and compare their lives to their own. “There’s an aspirational feel in that connection; we think we can be like these people,” he says. “If celebs are talking about the benefits of drinking less, we’re much more likely to cut back ourselves. It’s about where that message comes from.” I agree with this statement. I feel that if some celebrities spent more time focusing on the fact that young people in this day in age, look up to these celebrities and they probably try everything in their path to be like them, in any way shape or form. I think that if celebrities started talking about the benefits of drinking less or completely giving up, the general public would be more prone to cut back. Tyra Banks: Model-turned-TV presenter Tyra Banks hates the taste of alcohol and has never been drunk, but admits she orders wine in public because she thinks it makes her look sexy! “Every now and then I'll order some wine at the table. I'll only take two sips, but I'll keep holding the glass cause it makes me feel sexy, but I still don't drink it because it still tastes kind of nasty to me." |
Drugs:
The media has a big habit of inflating juicy celebrity scandals. Particularly those when it comes to stars and their drug usage. Justin Bieber’s recently leaked marijuana pictures, broadcasted by TMZ, are the latest to fall into the media’s hands and reopen the topic of celebrities as “role models”. But are the tabloids merely exhausting whatever material they come across, or should celebrities be held responsible for setting a bad example for their underage fans? Before this topic incites a deadly “Who cares?” response, let’s analyse who exactly should care that household names like: Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus and Kristen Stewart (the self-proclaimed “Valley Girl who smokes pot”) have all been subjects of tabloid fodder for their drug use. These stars have careers that are targeted towards the younger, impressionable population. Their fan base is particularly concentrated among young adults, preteens, and sometimes even younger ages. With the battle with drugs, I feel that this is getting more known with the general public, due to big named celebs like Lindsay Lohan, Johnny Depp and many others, confessing about their drugs abuse. There has also been some music celebrities who have dabbled in drugs too some examples are Curt Cobain from Nirvana, Elvis Presley and Whitney Houston and among many others too. Plastic Surgery:
The most recent such star is Taylor Swift We're used to seeing this 23-year-old in sweet, conservative, girly clothes. However, this month, in a matter of days, the country singer stunned us all with a series of deep plunging dresses. The photos fueled rumors that Tay has gone under the knife for a little boob job. Nothing major, just from an A cup to B, according to a plastic surgeon who spoke to InTouch magazine (but did not operate on the young star). I still find it very strange why people want to have plastic surgery, and then I see that sometimes it can make a difference to the certain person's appearance, whether it good or bad. |
