Primary Research:
For my primary research I was set a task by watching around four - eight+ films or TV series' and then deciding which scene I particularly I liked about that said movie, also I will talk about which scene I would like to recreate or change. I will give a film like based review and talk about the animations / visual effects used.
Also I have incorporated a video clip from Youtube, to show you each film trailer or what my favourite scene is.

Icons:
Are winners of popularity contests. Wide 'Brand' recognition and distortions of value systems raise appeal. Desires to emulate what we prize or escape what we are, creates a following that labels individuals as icons.
Something known to be an icon is that it''s memorable and we know it as soon as the film is played or when we see who the character is we know that they're iconic to the film and it makes it more enjoyable.
What "makes an icon" in America it's marketing, beauty, physical prowess and luck. Things like intelligence, vision and a deep commitment to making the world better for everyone rarely command icon status. We're paying a horrible, un-affordable price for investing in these false idols.

The Hero:
•Physically strong •Good looking •Young(ish) •Works with limited help – a buddy and the heroine. •Has limited weapons. •Quick thinking. •Chivalrous. •Trustworthy. •Follow a code that preaches loyalty, honour, duty, selflessness and spirituality. This guides their mission or quest. |
The Villain:
• Sometimes physically weaker and needs more weapons and back up. • Not as good looking (often scarred). • Often older. • Disloyal. • Selfish. • Greedy. • Creates suffering by causing war. • Shares the same quest as hero, such as trying to obtain a valuable artefact, but out of greed or desire for power. |
10th Kingdom:
10th Kingdom was a TV mini series back in 2000, if you have the DVD box set of this it usually takes around 6 hours and 55minutes. This box set however, is separated into 3 discs,
At the edge of the mortal world lies a mystical vortex which leads to the Nine Kingdoms, an imaginative land awaits where fairy tales are reinvented... and not with happily-ever-after results! An Evil Queen who's portrayed by Dianne Wiest, has just doomed Prince Wendell played by Daniel Lapaine to live the rest of his days as a dog. His quest to recapture the throne leads him through the portal to the mystical 10th Kingdom, which happens to be Central Park. With the aid of ordinary mortals, Virginia Lewis (Kimberley Williams) and Tony Lewis (John Larroquette), battle evil in this parallel Universe of vile trolls, Goblins and nearly every fairy tale ever imaginable. There are Stunning visual effects and the stellar cast, including Scott Cohen, Rutgar Hauer, Camryn Maheim and Ed O'Neil, dominate this epic adventure that surely will enchant everyone.
One of my favourite scenes in this epic, enchanting series is the stunning visual effects which are very captivating. I particularly like that in the beginning when Prince Wendell who has been turned into a dog, a magic mirror shows life in Modern day New York. The dog then jumps through this portal while Scott Cohen stands by and watches he has been sent by the Queen (Dianne) to capture the dog and bring him back to her. While Prince jumps through the portal we see a mirror floating around the screen and we see the mirrors smashing once the spirit of the dog has gone through each mirror. Here in the photo below, so you can understand what I'm talking about if you haven't seen this great series.
I would like to recreate this effect by using Director on iMac, I will photograph a mirror then find a New York sky line image from Google and would make the animation like it is in the film. Here I will add a video of my recreation of this animation .
The Heroes in this series was: Virginia, Tony, Prince Wendell, The talking birds, Snow White, Wolf, Cinderella, Acorn the Dwarf, Clayface the Goblin.
The Villains in this series was: The trolls, Troll king, Huntsman, Evil Queen (Christine White), Wilfred Peep, Governor of the Snow White Memorial Prison.

Dungeons and Dragons:
Dungeons and Dragons came out in 2000, and was directed by Courtney Soloman. This was a spectacular film with actors like Justin Whalin, Jeremy Irons, Bruce Payne and Marlon Wayans to just name a few, with guest cameo appearance of Richard O'Brien from The Crystal Maze.
For this particular film the plot is quite interesting yet very futuristic kind of. There are many planets throughout the multverse... Worlds where legendary creatures walk the Earth and fill the sky. Here be Dragons..
The basic plot of this film is as follows; in some worlds, man has learned to shape and focus on the natural weave of elemental forces. On these worlds, it is known to be magic. It would be the magic that dominates the Empire of Izmer, and only Mages, who are those elite few who are born with the ability to harness its power, have the right to rule. All the others are consigned to a life of lower status. In the principal city of Sumdall the Emperor rules from his royal palace, in conjunction with the Council of Mages. The standing imperial army, the Crimson Guard, and their commander, Damodar, enforce the law of the Mages throughout the Empire.
- The antagonist of the film, an evil mage named Profion (Jeremy Irons). I think that Jeremy was the perfect actor to play Profion as he is quite a dark person and most of his films he has played in, have dark, and disturbing Characters which he has played. Like Lion King for instance, he played the evil Mufasa which was quite a captivating role and drew me into Jeremy Irons. I think that he's a particularly interesting character and in Dungeons and Dragons I think the part of Profion suited him well.
More importantly the scene that would be my favourite would be when Ridley (Justin Whalin) has to get the "Eye of The Dragon" if he survives the maze, he then obtains the ruby. This was were Richard O'Brien came out with a bang, there were people on the sides betting on how long Ridley was going to live. It was a very interesting and tense part for me as there were different trials to go through, first it was swinging spiked axe looking things, then a room with tiles which if Ridley landed on the wrong tile fire would push out of the surrounding tiles. After this he was then entered into the next room which behind a safe lied the room where the ruby was in, but first he had to stop the sand timer before he was doomed and encased in, where he would lay a horrible fate. But as every tale goes the hero pushed on and got the "Eye of the Dragon".
Heroes in this film: Ridley, Snails, Empress Savina, Marina Pretensa, Elwood Gutworthy, Norda.
Villains in this film: Profion, Damodar, Xilus.

MARS ATTACKS!:
Here Mars Attacks was brought out in 1996, and it still a classic Tim Burton film. For me this film is one of Burton's best just because it is quite quirky like him and got the great contrast between good and evil and with the terrible yet good effects. The plot for this film is:
President James Dale of the United States and his right-hand man, Jerry Ross discover that an army of Martian UFOs are hovering around the Earth, and everyone has a different response. Some, like Texan alcohol dealer Art Land and slimy Jason Black, just want to make a profit out of it. Others, such as TV hostess Nathalie Lake, Land's spiritualist wife Barbara, and the Southern-like Norris family, are excited, and some, like Dale's wife, Marsha, and daughter, Taffy, don't care. Richie Norris is extremely intelligent but is only respected by his insane grandmother, while his older brother Billy is favored for joining the army. General Decker doesn't trust the Martians and insist they fight, but General Casey is more optimistic. The Martians appear to come in peace but suddenly begin to use their super-powerful and technologically advanced weapons to wipe out the population and great structures. Soon, they attack Las Vegas, where the Norrises are living, where former heavyweight champion Byron Williams is visiting, where an obnoxious lawyer is gambling, and where Tom Jones is performing in concerts.
This film is great, it really does grow on people does this film and it is one of them films where if it's on the TV you would watch it. The visual effects are really superb for the tine aliens in Mars Attacks! These were fully realized with CG animation, which was courtesy of ILM. Industrial Light and Magic have completed another landmark for computer generated imagery.
Heroes in this film: Billy Glenn Norris, Grandma Florence Norris, Taffy Dale, Richie Norris, Tom Jones, Barbara Land.
Villains in this film: Martian Girl, Martians.

The Martians for MARS ATTACKS! were created as computer generated images
courtesy of ILM. Especially attractive is the alien's jawbone, the glittering cape animation, and the accurate character facial animation. |
A closeup of a Martian getting teary-eyed. The production allowed the Martian
shots to be long, so that the audience could fully examine the alien creatures. Even in this closeup, the computer generated alien looks very realistic and integrated. |
Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban:
Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban came out in 2004 and was directed by Alfonso Cuarón.
Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban is the third film in the Harry Potter franchise and for me personally, it is best!
In the summer before his third year at Hogwarts, Harry Potter becomes fed up with his horrible aunt and uncle, and after accidentally inflating his visiting aunt Marge, he then runs away. Unfortunately, there's much more danger in the wizarding world than harry thought; convicted mass murderer, Sirius Black, has escaped from the Azkaban prison. Black is known as Lord Voldemort's most devoted follower, and he's after Harry to avenge Voldemort and finish the job. But not everything is what it seems, and inside of Hogwarts there may just be a traitor...
I think that it all happens in this one film. We get to understand who Sirius Black is, we get to see the Dememtors, Lupin then admits to being a werewolf. Harry gets the famous Marauder's map which plays a big part in this film. Harry has then agreed a private class with Lupin, in which he creates his Patronus charm, which will shield him from the Dementors.
I also love the typography of all the Harry Potter films, as they are all unique and quirky. I have noticed that there are two Lettering artists on the Harry Potter films and these were Bob Walker and Julian Walker, although these were only credited for three films.
My favourite part throughout this one film would be when Fred and George Weasley played by Oliver and James Phellps give Harry the Maurarder's Map. This is a very special map as is contains an image of the entire school and shows the real-time locations of everyone on the grounds. Fred and George also tell Harry that the map shows the whereabouts of several secret passages out of Hogwarts, ideal for leaving undetected. If I could recreate anything from this film and it would be when we see people moving around on the Marauder's map.
Here I found that someone had created quite an interesting animation using the Marauder's map.

Matrix:
Matrix came out in 1999, and was directed by Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski.
My perhaps favourite of the Matrix Trilogy for me has to be the first. There seems to be a lot of action going on in this particular one film.
In the near future, a computer hacker called Neo discovers that all life on Earth may be nothing more than an elaborate facade created by a malevolent cyber-intelligence, for the purpose of placating us while our life essence is "farmed" to fuel the Matrix's campaign of domination in the "real" world. He joins like-minded Rebel warriors Morpheus and Trinity in their struggle to overthrow the Matrix.
It is quite easy to establish the heroes from the villains in this film. Neo, Morpheus and Trinity are definitely the good main people in this wonderfully put together and thought out film. The main villains in this film would have to be Agent Smith who was played by Hugo Weaving and Cypher who was played by Joe Pantoliano. I quite like how Agent Smith was presented whilst in this film as it makes everything a lot more interesting and far greater. I love the whole action side of this film and it has a lot of it. The tight latex leather outfits are really incredible and again add a certain depth to how this film would be perceived, and for me it is one of best out of the whole three films which were made.
My favourite scene in this, would be when Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity are in the lobby as they try to save Morpheus. Neo and Trinity are carrying heavy rounds of bullets and quite a lot of guns and weaponry, then they star to shoot the police guards who are too, in the lobby. It is quite an interesting scene and it doesn't lack anything. That is why this scene is my favourite throughout this movie.
Heroes in this film: Neo, Trinity, Mropheus, Mouse, Oracle, Tank, Apoc, Switch, Dozer.
Villains in this film: Agent Smith, Agent Brown, Agent Jones, Cypher.

Labyrinth:
Labyrinth was aired in 1986 and was directed by Jim Henson.
The story for this fantasy based film was where 15 year old Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) accidentally wishes her baby half-brother Toby, away to the Goblin King, Jareth (David Bowie) will keep the baby if Sarah doesn't complete the Labyrinth within 13 hours.
I really like this film it has a certain rawness and was really fascinating to me, when I was younger this film was powerful to me and I loved the sense of imagination in this film. I also really liked the idea that David Bowie was going to play Jareth, I've liked David's music but when I was older and knew it was him, it was really exciting.
David had written some music, and performed them for the soundtrack too which made the film even better for me to watch, these songs include of:
1. "Magic Dance"
2. "Chilly Down"
3. "As the World falls down"
4. "Within You"
5. "Underground"
The costumes in this film were immaculate. I preferably loved Bowie's clothes as they were so 80's and were rather him. I also loved Sarah's dress when she is in the illusion of a Masquerade Ball inside a bubble, Sarah is the only character seen without a mask, Jareth removes his during this scene. The song ''As The World Falls Down'' written by Bowie in 1986 for the Soundtrack was the backdrop for this illusion in which Jareth the Goblin King builds around Sarah through the use of an enchanted peach.
My most favourite scene in Labyrinth would be the Illusion of the Masquerade Ball, inside a bubble, I always thought it was a fascinating piece of work and how they got to that part through the visual effects always confused me as it was a beautiful piece of art. If I could recreate any scene if would probably be this one as it was a perfect scene and was very interesting to me and drew me in to know how this wonderful place was being created.
Heroes in this film: Sarah, Toby, Hoggle, Ludo, Didymus, Worm.
Villains in this film: Jareth, Junklady.

The Wizard of Oz:
The Wizard of Oz came out in 1939 with the director of Victor Fleming.
This is an enchanting film where Dorothy Gale is swept away in a tornado into a magical land over the rainbow and embarks on a quest to get back home to Kansas.
This is one of my all time favourite films, I wasn't around when it was brought out but I definitely fell in love with it when I first watched it, it was everything I could of dreamed of when I was younger. This film has the power to enchant everyone of all ages with the actress of Judy Garland, she was a gem in this film and even with the Wicked Witch of The West it was still a big hit. I loved this film that much that I saw it on the west end and it was just remarkable I think it's a great film all round.
The Wicked Witch of the West, is the most significant antagonist in L. Frank Baum's children's books. Margaret Hamilton's performance was that terrifying, that most of her scenes had to be heavily edited or even cut out entirely.
-My perhaps favourite scene in this film would be the colour changing horse, it might not be the best scene to choose from but for me, it always entertains me and makes me smile and then I found out how they actually made the horse go all them different colours.
Here's a quote from a website about the fascinating facts of The Wizard Of Oz: if you watch closely you will see that the driver tries hard to restrain the horse from trying to lick itself. The filmmakers used a white horse and sponged it down with different colours of Jell-o. They had a hard time keeping the horse from trying to lick it off.
Heroes in this film: Dorothy, Professor Marvel, Scarecrow, Tinman, Cowardly Lion, Glinda, Auntie Em, Toto, The Munchkins.
Villains in this film: Miss Gulch, The Wicked Witch of the West, Winged Monkeys, Winkies.

The Shining:
The Shining came out in 1980 with the director of Stanley Kubrick.
The plot of this film is where a family heads to an isolated Hotel for winter and where an evil and spiritual presence influences the father into a violent way and while their psychic son see's horrifying forebodings from the past and then from the future.
I have mixed feelings for this film if I'm being honest, everyone I know has seen it and found it to be a classic film and I didn't get that. Yes, I thought it was quite an interesting film but not worth watching over and over again. I liked the idea of the film don't get me wrong it was a physiological film which was really intriguing and interesting, I was also really just waiting for Jack Nicholson to say the iconic line in this film "Here's Johnny!" and this quote didn't come till near the end so I was quite disappointed, but overall this film was rather interesting. I found the wife Wendy to be a bit ditsy but that's only to be expected for an 80's film which was rather amusing when she's trying to run away from her husband Jack, and obviously for a woman in this style of film, they cannot run.
My favourite scene in this film would've been when Jack Nicholson has an axe and is trying to get into the bathroom where his wife and son are hiding and he says "Little pigs, little pigs, let me come in. Not by the hair of your chinny-chin-chin? Well then I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house in" then he axes the door in while Wendy, his wife is screaming then when most of the pane of door has been cut through, he then says the iconic line "Here's Johnny!". I quite liked this scene as it was one that I was most waiting for, and it definitely delivered for me.
Heroes in this film: Wendy, Danny, Dick.
Villains in this film: Jack, Young woman in the bath, Old woman in the bath, Grady Daughter's.

Anastasia (1997):
Anastasia came out in 1997 and was directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. Quite obviously this was an animation of Anastasia finding herself and learning about her past.
When the dark shadow of revolution falls on the house of the Romanov's, the royal family's youngest daughter, Anastasia, barely escapes this siege by Rasputin. Ten years later and the Grand Duchess knows herself only to be names Anya, due to amnesia, which was caused by her hitting her head on that very night. But Anya still holds the memories of her past which was full of the grand palace and their royal grand parties. In order to discover more about herself, and this spectacular past, she travels to Paris with two con men: Dimitri and Vladimir who plan on passing her off as Anastasia to collect the reward money from the Dowager Empress in return for her grand-daughter's safe return. But what these two men don't realize is that they have found the real, Grand Duchess Anastasia. And what is worse: Rasputin, the former confidant to the Tsar, will not rest until he sees the end of the Romanov line.
For this film there is quite a certain depth, as I have looked up little trivial sentences for this film, and the stuff I found out was quite extraordinary, here's a few which I found to be quite interesting:
1. The drawing the Empress holds when she and Anya are reminiscing (the same one we see little Anastasia give her at the beginning of the movie) is a picture the real Anastasia had drawn for her father in 1914.
2. The portrait in the ballroom of the whole family includes a dog. The dog existed. This spaniel named Joy belonged to Anastasia's brother, Alexei, and was found alive at the house where the family was killed. Anastasia's own dog, Jimmy, did not survive.
3. The music box in this movie actually did exist. It was given to the real Anastasia by the real Marie Feoderovna for her thirteenth birthday, but it was silver with a ballerina on top.
I do really enjoy this film, as it was based loosely on a true story so it drew me in more, to find out more about this girl and her families life. It is quite an emotional film too, which is only to be expected really when it comes to animation films, as they are quite emotional. For this particular film though, the emotion was key for it to be quite a successful movie, and for me personally it was. I was really intrigued by how they took a real life event and made it into a stunning animation movie which is loved by most children and adults, also it is quite a powerful film as it relates to how much family is important and comes across rather well.
For me, my favourite scene in this film would be kind of hard to say, as I don't have a favourite scene in this movie, it's just too brilliant for me to put my finger on such a beautiful film and say which scene for me was the best. I thoroughly adore the idea that it was on a based true story and was very powerful. When I watch it back now my love for this film just grows it is a heartwarming film, and the end result for me and the Romanov's pretty excellent.

Ghost:
Ghost came out in 1990, and was directed by Jerry Zucker, This is a stunning piece of work and is heartwarming as it is a truly beautiful story line.
Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) is bank executive, who has moved in with his girlfriend, Molly (Demi Moore). One night while out on a date, a man comes out of nowhere and pulls out a gun and demands Sam's wallet, Sam was about to give it to him when a scuffle broke out and Sam was killed. Sam's spirit now remains on Earth and is walking around and encounters other spirits, who tell him about his transformation. Sam hangs around Molly and despite her not knowing it, is watching over her. One day the man who killed him breaks into the apartment and Sam stop's him before he could do anything to Molly. Sam follows him and discovers where he lives but unfortunately can't tell anyone. Sam then meets a supposed spiritualist, Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg), who is so obviously a huckster but who doesn't know that she can hear the dead. so when Sam speaks she hears him. He convinces her to tell Molly about the guy who broke into the apartment. Molly then goes to the police and they in turn tell her that Oda Mae's a con woman. She then tells her friend, Carl about what Oda Mae told her. He goes to investigate and Sam goes with him and discovers something terrible.
This film is a rather special romantic film yet has a supernatural feel to it. I really like this film as it's about a man who loves his partner so much that even though he has passed away he is still here on Earth because of how much this man loves her. This film is also special because of the three main characters who are Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg. In this film they each play very spectacular roles. Like Whoopi for instance, she is really amusing in this film which adds a lightness to the whole film, she is really funny in it so it comes across rather natural in a way. Then we have young Demi Moore who plays Patrick's girlfriend in the film, and they actually look rather stunning together I find it really cute as well, that they picked someone quite young for this role as it seemed to suit Demi so perfectly and it almost seem so real.
Patrick Swayze however, is a whole different story. As we know he passed away on the 14th of September 2009, and this film is a tearjerker for me personally. This film reminds me that Patrick Swayze has died and in the end it shows Sam Wheat going off into the Parallel Universe where the spirits go, and at the point I know that Patrick Swayze has gone and it makes me feel sad. Even though I didn't know him personally it still makes me feel emotion towards the film and towards something which cannot be forgotten, brought back or even traced. So for me, this film is really special , it is a heartwarming film and love does conquer all.
Heroes in this film: Sam Wheat, Molly Jensen, Oda Mae Brown.
Villains in this film: Carl Bruner, Willie Lopez, Subway Ghost.

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle:
The hand that rocks the cradle is an is a 1992 American thriller about a vengeful nanny out to destroy a naïve woman and steal her family. This was directed by Curtis Hanson.
D r. Victor Mott is a respected and successful gynecologist, but his respect and success both come to a crashing halt when he is accused of sexually molesting his patients. When Claire Bartel accuses him of this crime, four other women come forward to corroborate the story and also accuse the doctor. Stripped of his license and on the verge of being sent to prison, Dr. Mott commits suicide. As if this were not enough of a blow to Dr. Mott's now-widowed wife, she suffers a miscarriage, losing her unborn baby as well, and is on the verge of losing her home to civil judgments against her husband's estate. Broken, alone and now near-penniless to boot, Mrs. Mott learns that Claire is seeking a nanny for her own young children, and sees this as the perfect tool to exact a bloody revenge on Claire Bartel, and take Claire's family for her own...
This film is very dark, and also very eerie and it also has a very good plot the first time you watch it as you don't know what to expect. As the film progresses, the malicious schemes and loony excesses are combined, with Hanson's self-conscious direction rendering one particularly sensational murder even more implausible. It is very easy to distinguish the heroes and villains from this film as it well put to the audience who the good, and bad guys are.
Heroes in this film: Claire Bartel.
Villains in this film: Mrs. Mott / Peyton Flanders, Michael Bartel.

John Carpenter's; The Ward:
The Ward is a 2010 American psychological horror film directed by John Carpenter.
In 1966, in North Bend, Oregon, the runaway Kristen is captured by the police after burning down a farmhouse and is locked in the North Bend Psychiatric Hospital. Kristen is introduced to Dr. Gerald Stringer, who uses experimental therapy. Then she meets the inmates Emily, Sarah, Zoey and Iris and the tough nurse Lundt. During the night and in the shower later, Kristen sees the ghost of a woman and she learns that she is Alice Leigh Hudson, a mysterious wicked intern that has disappeared. When Iris is ready to go home, she is attacked by the ghost of Alice in the basement and murdered. She vanishes and the inmates decide to seek Iris out. Then Sarah is abducted by the Alice and also killed; the next one is Emily. Meanwhile Kristen escapes from her room and meets Zoey, expecting to protect her. However, Zoey is kidnapped by Alice and Kristen runs to Dr. Stringer's office. She snoops his desk and finds a report with the truth about Alice.
I really like this film. The first time I watched this interesting film I was always on edge and always awaiting something spectacular and gruesome to happen, and John Carpenter really fulfilled here.
The film is really grotesque, but I think that's why it has the extra edge. You don't really expect anything when your first watching it therefore, it has an interestingly good plot the first time you watch it. This film keeps you enticed and you really get a full, broad look on the film you really understand what's happening, especially if you stay connected with it. If you do begin lacking in attention with the film it's quite hard to understand what is going on in the movie, yet you will be able to understand the majority of what's going on because it is quite an easy based, get to know film as it is filled with tips to help you understand what's going on, even if you didn't pay much attention.
