Luca Pierro:
Luca Pierro is born in Cantù (Italy) in 1978.
He has published on the web and for various magazines (Getty Images, Digital Photo UK, Digital Camera UK, LA STAMPA).
He currently lives and works in Vancouver.
I really love Luca’s work as he uses natural materials / substances to use in his photographs; such as water, flour, talcum powder or sugar to create artificial images, creating unique works of art. I have researched Luca before in the first project and he has stayed with me, because of how unique his photographs and self-portraits are. I think it is really intriguing that he uses natural materials. The reason I incorporated him into this project again now, was because I want to use natural substances like Cream to create some striking images myself.
I think that the main photograph I really love is the one below at the beginning of the slideshow, I think that this was a flour based photograph, in which he through flour onto his face and hair, I also liked the way that some fell onto his shoulders. I like the way that this in black and white and the shadows look really interesting with the white flour, as juxtaposition. I think that this image is meant to feel quite dark, and to me it does. I think that because of the black and white image and the harsh shadows, yet it is a strikingly good image, and it’s one of my favourite images from him.

"Rather than relying too heavily on the visual manipulation techniques acquired through post-production editing, Pierro incorporates natural materials like flour, milk, and water on set, within the frame of the shoot.
Since we last saw Pierro, appearing through clouds of flour and covered in soapy water, he has continued his expressive works, producing more amazing shots to add to his 100 Self-Portraits project. Using a variety of elements, including new ones like wool and newspapers, the photographer immerses himself in his tightly-framed environment, translating human emotions while presenting a multitude of colors, textures, and materials.
Pierro's intentions with these series of images, as he explained to us in the past, are to link man with mother nature. The photographer himself serves as the representation of man with all of his facial expressions, visible emotions, and composition and the elements represent the earth from which they came. Even if some of the materials are man-made, they reflect man's interaction with nature."
